A friend is dying of cancer. There is no way of knowing how many weeks (or days) she has left. She is on about 50 kinds of meds for pain, nausea, etc. She can hardly keep solid food down and her partner has been giving her Ensure, but the sugar in Ensure makes her sick. They have switched to Slim Fast Optima (with less sugar in it) for now. Are there any other sources of easy-to-digest nutrition that wouldn’t cause nausea? Thanks.

Food before supplements. If you are not eating enough calories than you will not gain weight, no matter how much whey you take. I take Opt. Nutrition whey, its the best out there in my opinion. To gain weight make sure you eat 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight per day, and 3g of complex carb per pound of bodyweight per day. Also eat about 500 more calories than you burn a day.

    Good Protein Sources:
    Egg whites
    Chicken
    Milk
    Steak
    Fish
Whey (post workout and whenever you can’t cook)

    Good Carbs:
    Brown rice
    Vegetables
    Oat meal
    Wheat bread/pasta

As mentioned food should always come before supplements so I’d advise that you consume healthy nutritious foods first of al, however having said this, whey is beneficial for fast absorption in both the mornings and post workout.

    It’s definately worth consdiering.

Make sure you follow a suitable traiing program too!

Try Gatorade. If the sugars are tolerable, it could be a help. Another possibility is diluted baby pablum.

I would have her go back to her Dr and let them know the nausea meds aren’t working, they could try a different form on her to see if it eases it.

As for nutrition, possibly try something like pedialyte? (sp) for babies, it is made milder to not upset their stomaches. It wouldn’t give her as much nutirtion as ensure or similar products, but it would give her some for the time being!
