About $ 3,000 and up to about $ 4,000. No one can give you a good answer some cheap tourist who come here and stay for 2 months on less, but live worst off than they do at home. It’s up to your standard of living. Bring a ATM card and inform your bank your going overseas. Do the same with any credit cards. Exchange your dollars to baht here in Thailand for best rate. You come here to enjoy and see another lifestyle don’t miss it for a few dollars.
i have been to thailand many times, and i usually spend about $ 1000 for 5 weeks just for myself. This is for clean decent hotels ($ 7-14 an night for two people with AC) but nothing too fancy, and all transportation/food ect. I travel the country top to bottom on that much. Also I eat at a lot of local restaraunts, not because i am cheap, just because I love the food!! And I do whatever activities I want (snorkeling, trecking ect) Depending on what islands you are going to that can get expensive especially the more touristed ones. Anything more than $ 1000 will be icing on the cake, but if you are looking for minimum amount to still have fun, do the things you want, and not be uncomfortable than that is it. (but dont let the tuktuk drivers scam you – you have to NEGOTIATE with them or else you are going to be needing a much bigger thailand expense account!!)
Difficult to come up with a figure as it depends a lot on what you like doing but here are some rough prices:
Hotels – £10-16 a night for clean, non-fancy in BKK and Chiang Mai.
Food – starting from 60-80p for local dishes, up to whatever you want to pay. There is such a variety that it’s hard to say – easy to eat reasonably for around £3 a meal each though – can be a lot less as mentioned above.
Beer – bars frequented by locals sell it for around £2 for a 630ml bottle of 5-6% lager. Bars aimed at Westerners in tourist areas start at around £1.60 for a 330ml bottle, and some places will be a fair bit more than this.
I’m afraid I’m not a lot of help on the activities front but I would guess that things aimed at tourists will be a bit cheaper than in the West but not a whole lot.
Note on other posts: If you go as low as $7 for a hotel room in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you are highly unlikely to get a room with air-con. In BKK you will get a guesthouse room near Kaosan road that resembles a cell in a UK police station (only a little smaller) for $7 a night.
If you’re coming in July then expect almost daily showers, often in the late afternoon / early evening and the weather is not as hot as it is in April. However, I wouldn’t even try to sleep in rooms that only have a fan,as I think it will be uncomforable for you. I’ve been living here for 8 years and although I spent a year in a house with no air-con I wouldn’t want to do it again!
If I was forced to pick a number out of the air I would say you could bring £1500 and have a fun holiday if you are on a tight budget and aren’t planning on drinking a lot. If you want to take trips when you feel like it and party while you’re here then try to bring a fair bit more of course.
Another way to come up with a rough estimate could be to half what you spend on food and drink at home, add hotel prices and 70% of UK/US activity prices. Sorry to ramble on but it’s really difficult to be precise. Thailand is a country where you can live for a month on £400 or spend that much in a night – it’s really down to you.
Have a great holiday anyway
