Do I need to consume protein shakes to tone up?

Ok I am looking for a bit of information that can clear up a small argument that I had last night with my partner.
I have been going to the gym 3 times a week, belly dancing and ody pump for the last 3 months and am down to a lose size 8, but my partner said that I will never tone up as I don’t use protein shakes.

Is this true??
sorry bad spelling ‘ody pump’ is meant to be body pump (which is a weight lifting class).

Im 16 im 5ft7, 6 and a half stone (very skinny) but muscular. Can i take Protein Shakes to help me gain weight and get more ripped?

I train everyday for about half an hour (NOT TOO MUCH I KNOW MY LIMITS!)

I do an average of 100 crunches
I do 100 hammer curls on each arm
& i do 100 chest flies with dumbells…
i DON’T lift weights because i don’t have any … lol
Can i still take protein shakes if it says ”you have to be 18 and over” or
”Do not use if under the age of 18”?
How much Grams of protein should i take a day ? please answer ! thanks

no you will get big muscles.

  3. confused says:

exercise is what tones you up. Because you are using the muscles…. a drink is not going to do that for you.

  4. Stephski says:

No, load of rubbish. Basically, by exercising you will strengthen your muscles, but if you don’t change your diet, those muscles will still be covered by a layer of fat, so you wont be able to see them. You need to combine a healthy diet (to stop you putting on more weight) with weight-bearing exercises and cardio-vascular exercises so you will tone up the muscles as well as making them more visible.

  5. Gunny says:

not necesserily. it will speed things up. but if you have protien without excersize you can just end up putting on a lot of weight.

  6. suet moon says:

no. if you only want to tone muscles (ie not make them grow) alls you need to do is resistance training and with enough protein from a normal diet youll be ok. extra protein supplied by stuff like shakes is only needed when you want to BUILD muscles not tone them. on average people in britain are more likely to be eating too much protein rather than not enough (cos of the amount of meat in our diet) so thats another reason why you prob dont need protein shakes

  7. climba32 says:

possibly, they’re are just a supplement of protein to HELP repair muscle tissue, you r body will do tat regardless of protein shakes. depends how much exercise your doing and how much protein your all ready getting, you could end up putting more weight on

  8. Ellie says:

You don’t need protein shakes to tone up. Yes your muscles need protein to help repair the tear and rebuild. You can get natural proteins from steak. It sounds like you are doing a great deal of cardio the way to tone up now is with adding resistance to your workout. Use some weights.

    sure

  10. rbn1995 says:

if you can do 100 crunches then you´re not doing it right consider doing crunches with holding weights behind your head for resistance

Yes you are able to take protein shakes.
Now here is the thing you need to take the shake immediatley after your workout. This will let the protein to break down and work with your muscles. good luck.
