Will i gain muscle without using protein shakes?

I am 6’0 175 pounds of basically muscle. I have been an athlete my whole life, so i have never really gained weight. I wanted to head back to the gym in off season and try to get a good workout. I notice everyone likes to drink protein shakes, and i know they help you gain muscle, but is it possible to gain muscle without it? If i just eat regularly will i still gain muscle?

I’m trying to loose weight so ive been running for the past few weeks. I usually run from 2 to 3 miles in 30 minutes. Are there any benefits to drinking protein shakes after running or should i avoid them?

It’s actually BETTER to skip those fad protein diets & go back to the good ol’ basics : lean meats such as eggs (VERY good for you – the whole egg, not just the whites), chicken breasts, turkey meat, fish, lean beef, etc. NO pork because that meat is super, super fatty.

And if you eat regularly, assuming you have a balanced diet, then sure – you’ll gain muscle.

[Besides, you'll save way more money cooking/grilling/boiling your own lean meat than buying protein shakes left & right. In my honest opinion - most protein drinks are way too high in sugar to get much outta them.]

Absolutely, the majority of people using protein shakes are under the false assumption that they’re some kind of magical muscle building elixir. They’re NOT, in fact real food is better so long as it’s healthy.

You do however need a specialised diet to gain anything more than the “Beginner gains” when it comes to muscle, 5-6 meals a day are a must because the body cannot store large amounts of protein on a regular basis.

Now if you’re like me sometimes you may be too busy to get a full 6 meals in everyday, that’s where protein shakes come in handy, mix some powder up with a spoon and chug it down and there’s your protein fix for the next 3 hours. I keep a tub of whey powder in my car when I’m at work

Protein shakes are beneficial post workout because they are fast digesting but not required, people have been bodybuilding long before Protein Powder was invented.

P.S. Ryan, I am fully aware about the benefits of an insulin spike post workout, and the fact that’s it’s beneficial to get protein to the muscles ASAP via a fast digesting protein like whey.

That’s why I said post workout shakes are beneficial but not required. Personally I have myself some chicken and some krispy kreme donuts post workout to spike my insulin, you can keep your preciouse shake. Not that an insulin spike is required anyway, if you look at pictures of bodybuilders from the late 1800s they had no problem putting on muscle without powders.
